Narrative Essay- Harder than I thought
Well hello again,
I think the title of my piece pretty much speaks for itself, but please allow me to expand. I am hoping that I am not the only one who thought that this piece was a challenge. For me the challenge was more so in the writing of the piece all together. The concept of finding the perfect music to go along with a story that helps tell the story, seems simple enough but for me my mind kept going to fiction. This is where it got difficult because obviously this class is focusing on non-fiction pieces about ourselves. I found it difficult to stick to the prompt, I had plenty of ideas, but was having a hard time finding the soft, and being able to contain it into a three act structure. I kept going a different direction in the pieces i wrote, an pretty much wrote three different stories and having to pick one that went the smoothest in regards to the three act structure. After I finally got the piece picked out I had to pick the music, I wanted to use the same music throughout the piece because lets not get a held of ourselves I am still trying to figure out this Audacity thing. I ended up wanting the music to help break up scene changes in the story and I think my placement was pretty decent, but the real struggle was getting it to fade in and out naturally. This is something that I think i did my best on considering it was my first attempt, but its not pretty to be honest. I had trouble with the envelope tool, i couldn't get my voice that much higher than then the music, even though I got the music as quiet as I could. I still have some things I need to work on, but Rome wasn't built in a day I guess.

It's good to remind ourselves of that. (That Rome wasn't built in a day.)
ReplyDeleteI think there is a lot of pressure to be good at this right away. I know I've been writing for decades, and it can be frustrating trying to get all of the moving parts (the SOFT, pacing, music) together when "it's just writing, isn't it?"
I'm glad we'll get a chance to tighten all of these up in the final portfolio.
I also found this piece to be more challenging that I anticipated. It sounds easy, in theory, right? But It took me a long time to find my way around Audacity. I kept finding that I knew what I wanted to do/change, but I didn't know quite how to get there.
ReplyDeleteLearning how to cleanly and succinctly outline a SOFT is still something I'm working on. It's a bit like the thesis of an academic paper-- I actually think that learning to identify the SOFT in these non-fiction pieces will help me write better theses in other class. Who'd'a thunk it?
