Thoughts on the Radio Essay
As I signed up for this course I wasn't expecting this course to be what it is. I am not quite sure what I was expecting but it has challenged me in ways I never thought were possible. It has been extremely difficult to adjust and adapt my writing style and skills to work with being read aloud. I have always been used to writing normal essays, papers, blog posts, and journaling.
I have also been challenged by the software we are using because I have never used anything like Audacity before and it is extremely challenging when you don't understand how it all works. I have spent numerous hours playing around and trying to get the hang of it, yet I am still struggling. All I know how to do so far is add files together and move them to match up on the track.
I never understood how I needed to write differently when I my work was going to be read aloud because I have always written the same way when I was told to give a speech. It never crossed my mind that the things I wrote would sound odd or be difficult to understand when sharing it verbally.
Overall, it has all been equally as difficult for me. I am not sure if I would ever want to pursue anything in the area of recording or writing for audios. Hopefully as the semester goes it will get easier and more enjoyable for me.

Sorry it's been a struggle, Lexie. I think the key, particularly in these early stages of learning the genre and the technology, is to accept that your initial efforts will fall short. This is actually a thing. Scholarship on writing suggests that when students--even those who are competent writers--initially try on a new discourse, their writing falls apart. It's part of the learning trajectory.
ReplyDeleteChallenges can be a good thing in life. Just try to focus on all of the aspects that are strengthening your writing. I anticipate it will get easier for all of us with a little more practice.
ReplyDeleteI think that something to try to keep in mind when developing a new skill like this is that, as writers, we are almost always our own harshest critics. Just because you haven't yet hit the standard you hold for yourself doesn't mean that you aren't doing well in comparison to your peers.
