Making the Narrative Essay

This project was extremely difficult for me. I have a lack of aptitude for musical awareness so that was an early roadblock. In the recording process, I found it difficult to identify where to pace my narration and later the placement of music was a challenging and trying element for me. I also struggled to incorporate enough music and find music that fit my subject which lends to identifying subject audio agreeance. There is also the fact that I think I need to practice with audacity as the tech side of this was hard for me.  Ultimately I ended up severely displeased with my recorded draft but that's the benefit of drafts, there is room for improvement. The class workshop has been of a significant help to me I especially like that I now have an awareness of the concept of where to add pause. Beng able to hear how other people put their pieces together has been helpful in showing me how these types of projects should be structured. How to queue music in and where to put it has been really difficult and I feel that my understanding of the craft was limited so hearing examples is great. One of my big issues in my script is the progression and structure of it and hearing other peoples recordings has been helpful in the rewrite. Overall I have to say that this assignment was very challenging but has also come with some excellent learning opportunities and has hopefully set up a solid ground for future projects.

  1. Hi Lillian,
The tech stuff can be challenging for sure. But it's great to hear that hearing the pieces in workshop is giving you insight into how to solve several problems, including structure and queuing music. Can you say more about what exactly you're learning about either or both? It might be useful to actually articulate that as a way to help you think about revision.

    1. Prof. Ballenger,
I think one of the most helpful things I am learning as we workshop and listen to other student's pieces is about pacing. I find that in my own work my rhythm and speed in my delivery feels a bit off so it is helpful to see where other people slow down or break off for a moment, this also plays into music queuing as a more balanced paced seems to lend better to the addition of music. Workshop has allowed me to see a variety of different styles which is great a it allows for exposure to a variety of things that work. As far as tech is concerned I am just trying to practice with audacity as I feel my lack of experience is the leading component in the issues I have been having.

  2. Music currently feels like the bane of my existence as well.

I knew what kind of music to look for, at least, but as was on display today I had very little finesse when it came to fading in and out; the envelope tool is not my friend.

I feel like we'll probably all have a better handle on it when it comes time to recreate these pieces for portfolio.

    1. John,

I totally understand your struggle. I also did not particularly get along with the envelope tool, but have been practicing with it. I agree that as we revise and become more refined in our skills we should see and have a far better handle on the editing component.
